Here's a self-serving bit of propaganda that will make any thinking
person's blood boil:
http://www.iihs.org/sr/pdfs/sr4301.pdf
Among the highlights: they discovered that lots of people exceed the
speed limits on freeways in major metropolitan areas (DUH!) but
instead of placing the blame on underposted speed limits they attempt
to blame the automakers for putting more powerful engines into the
average car.
In another stunning discovery, they determined that putting speed
cameras on freeways causes drivers to slow down. DOUBLE DUH!!
Also, in another attack on auto manufacturers, they imply a ridiculous
cause-and-effect relationship between the higher horsepower in cars
and higher insurance claims. Gee, there couldn't be ANY OTHER CAUSE
for higher insurance payouts, like maybe HIGHER COSTS FOR
CARS/REPLACEMENT PARTS, could there? Oh no - it MUST be due to all the
increased horsepower that those big bad automakers are putting into
cars these days!!
This is the kind of bullshit "research" that should have GPSTroll
doing multiple spit takes and screaming "spurious conclusion!!" And
yet, somehow, I predict he will find a way to agree with the study.
After all, the enemy of his enemy is his friend. :)

lol.... A stock '32 ford w/flathead V8 could exceed the chicago expressway
speed limits with EASE.

Don't you know having a turbo charger means the fenders damage easier and
the car hits things harder... :)

He'll agree with it.

A 1989 Civic I once owned, with its 2.0L engine, would more than
handle all speed limits including those in western Texas. WTF do they
expect to put in the cars to keep the HP down; lawnmower engines?
Plus, have the automakers really put more powerful engines in cars?

You know you don't need that much HP to take a modern car at freeway
speeds when you find more metal in a beer can. :)

GPSTroll's chin would be soaked.

GPSTroll's chin would definitely be dripping.

A '32 ford w/flathead V8 could do 100mph and it had.... wait for it.... 82
horsepower.
More powerful engines have nothing to do with it. It's the suspension,
braking, handling, and other chasis upgrades that make faster speeds
comfortable and SAFE. 1.6L engines do not stop people from crusing the
German Autobahn at 100mph.
