The cops and paramedics have to come out and rescue the injured and the
highway may be shut down for hours. All this costs money to the taxpayers
and i say the speeder or DUI or whatever that caused it should be billed
big time - like maybe $50,000.
When mountainclimbers have to be rescued, they are sent a bill for the
rescue effort.

Nope not always. They may be sent a partial bill, or maybe
not, depends on the circumsatcnes.
BTW, climbing a mountain is not drunk driving.

It's pretty much SOP to bill climbers who need to be rescued esp if it's
their own damn fault.

Yes, as long as we can also bill sloths and LLBs for the number of hours of
agony they cause commuters who are unfortunate enough to get stuck behind
them.
