I did a favor to the folks in my neighborhood yesterday. I walked to
the shops instead of driving the mile there and the mile back. I
looked before I crossed the street, but not at the lights - at all the
traffic in sight.
Did anyone else here walk two miles yesterday to help ease the
traffic, save some monet, or just get exercise and bark at dogs?

I have to admit, I'm lazy when it comes to getting groceries. I
already work out and walk and carry my golf clubs (harder than it
sounds: 25 pounds over 7 hilly miles).

I've been riding my bicycle to the store for groceries, unless it's the big
shopping trip;a long list or heavy stuff.

The wife and I have several of theose stretchy knit grocery bags. When
you're walking to the store, they wad up into a ball and fit into your
pockets (or you can put all of the other bags into one bag and carry
that); each bag holds as much as 2 or 3 of the plastic grocery bags,
and the handles are more comfortable on the hands when walking back
home.
We do use the car for bulky items like cat litter and cases of
Perrier, though.
For over a year I walked to/from the Metrolink station. About a year
ago I rented a bike locker at the station and started riding my bike
there.
Some people hear this and think "gosh, with gas prices over $4/gallon,
I wish I had some alternatives like those!" To those folks I must
point out that this didn't just happen by accident: I *purposely*
picked a house that was within wakling distance of all my daily needs,
as opposed to the much-more-common house that's out in Bufu Egypt and
requires a car to get ANYWHERE. And now I am really reaping the
benefits of that planning and forethought.

For those who carry stuff home in those cheap plastic bags, it is
worth having a couple short lengths of split hose to ease the strain
on fingers. I usually have a canvas bag or two - haave had since 1972.
I've always lived within walking distance of the shops - but not so
close that I suffer from their litter.

That's a good idea, but it's still better not to use the plastic bags
at all (unless you have the discipline to recycle them). Also, some
stores (like Wild Oats) give you a cash discount for each bag you
supply yourself.

Huh? Generally speaking for the last 19 years I've walked everything
under a mile (sometimes more when I feel like it) and bike a fair amount
of stuff over a mile that doesn't involve cargo or isn't being combined
with another trip. (ie... if I am driving past the post office I'm not
going to go home get on bike and go to the post office, I'll just add
the stop to the driving trip)
What stops me from biking more is that I am not a morning person.
Although I'm probably going to try to force myself into morning cycling
soon.
