New Chinese bridge brings out lookie-loos
Folks checking out the sea scenery cause big traffic problems

updated 2:25 p.m. MT, Tues., May. 6, 2008

BEIJING - China opened the world's longest cross-sea bridge last week
aiming to cut travel time between two major ports, but hundreds of
drivers have been fined already for, unexpectedly, driving too slow to
enjoy the view.

The 22.4-mile-long structure spans Hangzhou Bay in the booming province
of Zhejiang, designed to slash travel time between its port city of
Ningbo and the financial hub Shanghai from four hours to two and a half.

But since its opening on May 1, police have fined more than 300 drivers,
most for driving too slowly or illegal parking on the emergency lanes
while enjoying the ocean view and taking photos, local media reported on
Monday.

"I just wanted to drive a bit slowly and enjoy the sea breeze. Is that
wrong?" Zhejiang's official news portal (www.zjol.com.cn) quoted an
unnamed driver as complaining.

Long lines of cars carrying whole families eager to see the bridge and
sea vista have caused serious traffic problems and led to a series of
accidents, the news portal said.

Some drivers busted for illegal parking even posed in front of police
cameras, hoping to turn police snapshots into souvenirs, it said.

"Traffic jams should be impossible under normal circumstances given the
capacity of the bridge," the news portal said.

The $1.7 billion bridge's much publicized "sightseeing platforms" in the
middle of the span will not be ready for tourists for another two years,
local media have reported.

going after asians too? Is there any ethnic group that you don't hate?

You must not have read the article (what a surprise). They made *UNSAFE*
driving a "crime" (read: fineable offense, because even in China I doubt
it rises to the rank of being actually criminal).

They should be applauded for actually enforcing laws that make driving
safer and more pleasant. We have similar laws on the books, only
difference is here they are rarely enforced.

Few things are better at making the roads more dangerous for everyone
than an oblivious sloth, someone who is too busy sightseeing to actually
drive.

Hey, SADDAM, I think I might change my sign-off on this group to
"SADDAM would rather risk the lives of other drivers trying to drive
safely than risk him/herself getting a ticket for driving at a safe,
but illegal speed in traffic." (Getting back to what the California
Drivers Handbook says.)

When you start with a faulty premise, such as "slow driving is safe
driving" you come up with a faulty conclusion, such as "they
shouldn't fine slow drivers".

Of course slow driving is safe and fast driving is dangerous and only a nut
like you would think otherwise!!! No doubt you also think child molesting
is good for the kiddies. Get help please.

So why do you drive over 1 mph, eh killer?

Now that just shows how stupid you are.  Why would anyone drive 1 mph?
Walking is faster. THINK you hater.

Why drive at all?

It's good for the environment!

I eat a whole lot of beef and other things that require quite a lot of
resources to produce.  So if I walk, and burn those calories, the carbon
footprint to create those calories is not inconsiderable.

OTOH, I can ride my motorcycle and be getting fifty miles to the gallon.

So driving is green!

( Hey, that's how I justify it to my lazy self, anyway. )

I've come to the conclusion that SADDAM, gleefully and knowingly,
endangers other drivers just to be able to say, with pride, that s/he
doesn't speed, and, in his/her sick mind actually believe it.

Slow driving is safe.......when there are no other drivers around
driving at a sane, but faster, speed.

I wonder if SADDAM gets as much of a kick making SADDAM look like a
fool as I do making SADDAM look like a fool.
It's too bad that such a creature as SADDAM doesn't exist.

Absolutely NOT SO if your slow driving causes traffic mayhem.

The idea that you can make any idiot driver into a safe one simply by
restricting their speed is about the stupidest idea ever.

Of course the best approach is DECENT DRIVER EDUCATION !

I guess that they learned that "Go with the Flow" is the way to safer
traffic.
