Actually it's better to maintain a higher pedal rpm. I used to try to
stay in higher gears when riding uphill, but I find that I can go faster
by pedaling faster in a lower gear. The trick is to keep your rpms
high, and as soon as it starts getting too difficult to maintain it,
downshift and try to go even faster. You'll lose very little in terms
of speed that way.

yeah, I got that bit. I just don't like moving slowly. Some things
never change :)

Hmmm... I am more of a power rider I guess. I charge hills by getting up
as much speed as I can before climbing and then shifting to the easier
gears as I climb. only in my riding out of state would I end up running
out of gears ;) <insert flatlander jokes here>

Not necessairly. According to the article I read and a news report I
saw last night, they are calling for boycotting one company at a time;
as in Checron this month, Exxon next month and so on.... That's going
to be just like the, "great american gas outs," that sprung up when
the previous occupant of the whitehouse occupied the white house and
gas dared to spike to US$1.50: The boycotters will still be buying the
stuff, it will just be a matter of from whom you are buying it from as
opposed to when.
I still say that if people want to make a difference with these,
"boycotts," let them park their cars for a month or so and consume
*no* gasoline during that timeframe. Anything else is just so much hot
air from the exhaust pipe just above their chins.....

I think we all could stand to lose a few pounds these days. It amazes
me that some of these people are even able to drag themselves out of
bed in the morning.....

Yeah, I gotta keep my eye out for that bush rebate check. I still have
my eye on that Giant 21-speed that I test rode last month.

Thanks for reminding me to check. looks like I just got mine today
(direct deposit. Does happy dance.) Now do I blow some of it on a set
of SPD pedals/cleats/shoes or something cool for the Stude? (yes, I did
say "some" - I transferred half of it directly into savings, as I'm sure
many other people are doing in this economy. Good thinking, Georgie. I
ain't sending it back, though.)

That's generally my plan, part of it to savings and part for the bike
(I already have most of the money for the bike laying around, just
want to gat the check first for some reason), then it will be on to
bridge climbing on the new bike......
>Good thinking, Georgie. I ain't sending it back, though.)
Though, the next guy (or gal - I suppose she still has a mathmatical
chance of winning the nomination) may have to take it back.....

I just picked up some closeout M28 Aero wheels (everyone says the
ALX-295s I have suck; they've been OK for me but I haven't ridden
anything else), and some Dura-Ace 10-speed shifters. None of it from
the rebate check, though; that all went to pay local taxes (keeping in
mind that money is fungible...).
I'm sure there's enough irresponsible morons out there for the
"stimulus package" to have the effect Georgie wants. Same ones who
are having trouble with the payments on their McMansion and have to go
into debt to fill up their Tahoe XLs.

Pretty clear they don't understand fungible. All they are going to do is
hurt the few private gas station owners out there. So what if Mobil
sells less at the pump? The gasoline from their refineries will just go
to a BP station. I guess they'll lose the snack revenue at the corporate
owned stations.... but I doubt that was the point.

Yep.

For some reason of those who are hostile to bicyclists many fit that
description.

I just want warmth. May 11th and I still have to wear the long pants and
two shirts (one long sleeve) to ride. Did 17 miles today, longest of the
season thus far... damn cold.

Well this thing is being called for by the SCLC. Says a lot, IMO....

That's true. And when its BP's turn, the gasoline will go to the Mobil
station (or the Shell or Chevron etc... station). I think I'll keep an
eye on this boycott thing and who ever is the target of the boycott,
that's who I'll get gas from that month (atleast the lines should be
shorter).

Agreed. Needless to say, riding around here can be an adventure....

Don't worry, I'm sure it will warm up soon enough.
