History channel: one distracted driver can shut down a freeway

Watching some program on limited access highways on the history channel
right now... someone actually did the simulation work to prove what I've
been saying for years regarding the impact of poor driving on
congestion.

His simulation appeared to be showing the traffic jam caused by one
idiot driving slow and distracted in the middle lane.

dang, wish I'd caught that... have to see if it's on again soon.  I see
that it was the "superhighways" episode of Modern Marvels.

(yes, I'm doing my laundry on a Friday night.  Seems lame but it's
supposed to be nice all weekend so I'm planning hopefully one day of
yardwork and maybe two of Studebaker resurrection.)

It crashes even faster when you put an LLB near the CLB.  I don't need a
program to notice this, as it takes about a minute to get a traffic jam,
and the jam takes 20 minutes or more to clear once the obstructions have
been removed.

The lane-blockers lately have been honking at me, maybe angry that
someone would force his car in front of theirs.  These lane-blockers are
wasting everybody's fuel and time, and making a dangerous situation for
drivers who are trapped in the congested traffic.  Their removal should
be a priority for all traffic enforcement, not just on the fastest
sections of roadway.  With the rising cost of petrol, it is even more
important to eliminate lane-blockers as a big cause of traffic jams.

Neither do I. But it's been an uphill argument with some people. Just a
feeling of vindication when the research work backs up one's
observations and theories :)

Essentially, you are correct, about the poor driving.  The rest is
pure self delusion and stretching both your arms practically from
their sockets to pat yourself on the back, for absolutely no reason.

A googolplex of such simulations wouldn't "prove" a single thing,
(beyond that a lot of people like to create a lot of similar
simulations, and have for a long, long time) so naturally one
simulation hasn't either.

Essentially, it is not the slower driver in the wrong lane, it's the
poor driving of those who encounter them.

Assuming each vehicle occupies the same amount of space per velocity
the slower driver actually occupies less, assuming all vehicles are
equal so the slower vehicle is able to stop in less space.

It's all the many drivers operating too fast and too close and not
looking ahead and failing to plan and signal and execute their
maneuvers well in advance that "makes" the slower driver in the wrong
lane into a congestion creating problem.

I propose that it takes a shitload of suboptimal driving to create
congestion in free flowing traffic, and that one distracted slower
driver couldn't execute them all.

And, I don't see how "distracted" might be a factor of the congestion
production of the slower driver, unless they're driving slower because
they are distracted, a completely unnecessary "motive".

If the simulation included more than two drivers the simulator needs
to assume a certain percentage of the others, and I would argue that
in the real world that would be more than half, are distracted as
well.

No - the jam was caused by psychopaths like you that insist on breaking the
law and speeding. Slow down and drive legally. How many kids do you murder
each week by your speeding.?

Who says the OP is speeding? THINK!
