"It was one of the dullest drives of my life, but in the interest of
science I stuck with it," Clarkson said. "Seriously, what I'm saying is,
it isn't what you drive that matters, it's how you drive it. That is
everything."

Another ridiculous Top Gear comparison. These guys may be amusing, but they
are also full of s#$%. They ran the Prius flat out on a test track - not
something it was designed to do.

Well, it just proves exactly what was said- its how you drive it.
If you're a club-footed dolt, you'll get crappy mileage.

Did you read the article? It was written in a deliberately miss leading
style - particualrly the first paragraph.  Rubbish journalism.  The final
conclusion is valid, but in fact I doubt that anyone coming close to obeying
the laws when driving on a US public road (or British for that matter) would
be able to get better mileage in an M3 than in a Prius.

there have been a few of these comparisons in past months. the first i saw was an m5
diesel vs a hybrid (prius?) long distance across part of europe. a lot of steady speed
driving. conclusion was: own a hybrid for daily work commute and shopping. rent
something bigger for the vacation drive.

if you don't mind restricting your travel to approximately parabolic routes, you could
get even better mpg by catapult. (especially with a tailwind)

Whether it was designed to do it or not, it did point up that simply
having a Prius is no guarantee you're going to get good mileage: how you
drive matters too.

I guess my answer is "so what?"  Anyone can mock up a test to favor
one vehicle over another.  What counts is real-world driving.  This
test was far from that.  10 laps flat out.  Get real.

And I say, where's the sense of humour?

Ha Ha Ha.....

I only object for the way the newspaper article was written. The first
paragraph suggested that this stunt somehow had some bearing on a London
plan to reduce traffic congestion.

The absurdity of the congestion tax and it's exceptions for politically
correct vehicles is a running joke.

Top Gear previously made fun of this when they used that micro car that
was slightly less portable than a bicycle.... how for it they had to pay
a congestion tax but the hybrid SUV camera car didn't require one. This
thing was so small in one scene a guy is driving it in the isles between
cubicals.

10 laps flat out for a Prius, that's not exactly moving very fast...

He is absolutely 100% correct.

I can get ~30 MPG on the freeway at 75 MPH in my 400HP V8 Corvette IF
I leave it in 6th gear, engage the cruise control, and keep my feet
off the pedals.

Q: What's the difference between a traffic snake and a real one?
A: The traffic snake's a.shole at the *front* end.

If the Prius they tested only got 14PMG, something is seriously wrong
with their car or their testing methodology. I drive a 2008 Prius and I
routinely get around 46MPG and on long drives, it hovers around 50MPG.

Were you driving that Prius "as fast as possible?"

I have no problem whatsoever believing that a Prius gets only 14 MPG
at 105+ MPH. At that speed, the wimpy little gasoline engine is
probably doing ALL of the work.

I drive the speed limit. For example, today, I put a lot of miles on the
NJ turnpike where the speed limit is 65MPH and I got around 45MPG.

So is that a problem with their car or with their testing methodology?
