Well, since 5000 watts is only about 6.7 horsepower (even imagining 100%
battery and motor efficiency), it'll take a long time to charge that baby if
he wants to do any serious driving. And of course, it has to be charged
during the day, which is when he's most likely to want to drive it. And if
the goal is a $0 fillup, it would be better to get an electric car, and not
a hybrid, to avoid the dead weight of the superflous gasoline engine.

Alternately, he could hook the inverter to the grid (so that during
the day the meter runs backwards - ASSuming the meter is capable of
that) and then plugs the car in at night and draws the power then.

Of course, by having the, "Coming," under the description of the car,
maybe he was envisioning of some new technology in hybrids that hasn't
been developed/marketed yet.

[Sigh] The EU is looking into building massive solar farms. It turns out
that, even with the costs of long distance transmission taken into
account, the most cost effective place to locate them will be in North
Africa.

The camel jockeys may have the last laugh yet.

The US has plenty of places to build solar farms (thermal solar, not
the photovoltaic stuff which has been "on the horizon" as long as
fusion).  Unfortunately, most of it is under the jurisdiction of the
Bureau of Land Management, which sees it as its sworn duty to make
sure the desert lies empty.  Solar farms might kill some endangered
sagebrush, you know.  If they ran Saudi Arabia not a drop of oil would
come out of it.

Why not put it on an equal footing with the endangered permafrost?

I love the desert and often spend time on BLM land.  I do *not* want it
covered up by solar collectors.  It is the role of New Jersey to be the
industrial cesspit of the country.  Just leave the damn desert alone,
please.

You can trust me; I'm not like the others.

There's plenty of desert for everybody to enjoy AND to blanket with
solar panels.

Q: What's the difference between a traffic snake and a real one?
A: The traffic snake's a.shole at the *front* end.

Or let them build the solar farms in Mexico and ship the power back over
the border. Turn the Mexicans into the Arabs of this hemisphere.
