I'm new to this group. Saw a message from a couple months ago asking
for help with a carburetor problem with an 86 nova--sounded just like
the problem we're having here. I'm wondering if the person with the
original problem (name on the post was "silver5liter") was able to
resolve it and if so, how?
We had the carburetor on ours all open this evening, and thought sure
it would work after it was all back together, but it didn't. At least
we didn't have to pour gas into the carb to get it started anymore, but
it still wouldn't keep running.
Does anyone have any suggestions what we should check next? We already
put a new fuel pump on it--the gas gets right up to where it goes into
the carburetor, but that's it.
Also, is there a manual we can get or someplace online that will help
us do this--we're not mechanics, just laypeople trying to get an old
car running, so we could use some basic and not overly technical
instructions.
Thanks

Have you gone back to verify float adjustment?

It might not have enough fuel pressure to push the needle open...check
pressure if verifying float drop and needle/seat condition yeilds no
answer...

Don't know how you determined it was getting fuel to the carb but no
further? There may be an filter inside the the fuel inlet to the carb
and it may be plugged.

A half decent inexpensive repair book is called a Haynes Manual. They
are not the best, but cover the basics.
I would be wondering if the gas line had a pinhole leak in it so the
pump is sucking mostly air which gives no fuel pressure.
The likely spot for leaks is where the rubber lines joint the steel and
where the steel line is clipped onto the frame. I would look for small
stain marks on the lines. They are suction lines, so a leak won't
always drip on the ground.
Where is the gas filter? A plugged one can also give your symptoms.
