Ignition coil question

After an engine starts does the coil continue to put out high voltage to the
distributor? Or does it go out of service kind of like the starter once the
engine takes over?

The ignition system continues to put out high voltage to the spark plugs.
There is usually a higher
intensity spark during starting, and it may then drop to a 'run' level when
the engine fires up.

Well, Shep, heck no they don't.  At least he told us it had a distributor,
which eliminates diesel
as a possibility ;>)  Heck, arent all cars the same???

surprised someone didnt give him a practical lesson like unhooking a plug
lead and touching his tongue to it while engine is running..........100K
volts would have given him a quick answer!............kjun

The first answer by MasterBlaster is what I was looking for. The coil works
in another Metro of the same type. For some reason will not produce the
high voltage to the distributor in the Metro that I am trying to
troubleshoot now. I was curious how the coil worked seeing as how nothing I
have tried to this point has worked. The quick answer to your above
statement is it wouldn't have given me a thing and that therein lies the
problem.

It doesn't matter if the ignition uses points or not.

The coil creates the high voltage that fires the plugs. The distributor sends (or should
we say "distributes") the voltage to the plugs in the proper sequence. No coil, no spark.
