Hi all,
I have a 2000 Grand Am that seems to have a clunk in the steering wheel
when i move it back and forth when the engine is not running... I can
feel it in the steering wheel, so I believe that it somewhere from the
steering rack up. The rack should be okay because it was just replaced.
Does anyone have any ideas? It's really bugging me...
Thanks!

Could it be that this clunk noise started after the steering gear was
replaced ( at least that is what I infer from your message) and wouldn't
you suspect that who ever replaced the rack might have caused the problem? I
think I would probably ask the person who replaced the rack to have a look
at it and see if maybe they forgot to tighten something or whatever. Could
very well be the rack mounting bolts are loose or the bushings are not
installed properly. That could certainly cause the symptom you described.

I had similar problem and the rod end was worn out. Not sure why they guy
who worked on it would reinstall a bad one though. As other poster said,
may be loose.

thanks... apparently GM has a problem with their intermediate steering
shaft. It is improperly lubricated and causes the symptoms I seem to be
having. There is a $20 kit that is supposed to fix this...
