Pinging noise from under car at certain RPM - any idea what it may be?

Anyone know what a pinging(?) noise from under the car around 1500 RPM
during acceleration may be?

(The sound is suggestive of something lightly striking a hollow metal
object, something like 3 times a second. No idea what actually makes the
noise.)

The car is automatic, about 9 years old.

Thanks.

This sounds like engine knocking to me. You notice this sound at low
rpms and during acceleration where engine load is high. If your engine
is fully computer controlled you should review your knock sensor. It
may be not working as it should so the timing cannot be retarded. Check
it again by fulling your tank with a high octane fuel.

Since the poster chooses not to share make and model with us no useful
answer can be given.  He  could have a Lexus, could have a Volkswagen
diesel!

Which it may or may not have.

If during acceleration it is likely detonation, otherwise known as ping,
spark-knock or east of the atlantic, pinking.  If the car has detonation
detection, the detection system may not be working properly.  Or, if it
does NOT have detection, it may be a fault in the spark timing.  To see
if it is spark knock, try a tankful of the highest octane gas you can
find in your area, and see if it eliminates or at least reduces the knock.

sounds like a lifter or pushrod outa adjustment - without knowing the
year/make/model/engine size is difficult to determine additional info!

I have a 2000 F-150 that does this. Turns out it's one or more small
stones in a shield around the muffler and/or tailpipe.
