Excessive drive axle play on '97 Camaro

My '97 Camaro Z28 has an annoying play in the drive axles allowing the
left disc to touch the caliper. I measured the play and it's about 1/4
inch on the left side and 1/8 on the right. I also removed the left
drive axle to see if I could find the cause, but both the axle and the
c-clip look fine. No apparent wear on either, so the problem must be
somewhere else. What's the other part in the differential that keeps the
drive axle in place? I never removed the gears since it wasn't covered
in my manual, so I couldn't see how much wear there was there.
Basically, is there a quick fix for this, like putting shims/washers
inside of the c-clip, or does the whole differential need to be removed?

Thanks,

Ulf

Diff side gears could be worn that is what the c clip rides against.

Okay, so it's no big deal then. Those gears are pretty deep so there's
no risk it'll wear through, right? It might even be be possible to buy
another c-clip and put two on that side, IIRC the groove in the shaft
was pretty wide. Otherwise a trip to the hardware store and stack up on
a few washers might be a good idea until next time I change the diff oil.

Not a good idea, if 2 clips fit the axle groove is worn, 1/4" is way too
much, the c clip could come out if not corrected properly, you know what
happens then!
