I have a 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac with 68,000 miles. I'm thinking I have a fuel related problem. Idles fine and will accelerate normally up to 3,000 rpm. After that, runs rough and won't accelerate. Let off throttle and idles normally again. So I replaced fuel filter.....no luck. Now I'm thinking fuel pump. Are there other things that I should be looking at??? No codes flashing....nothing. Maybe a sensor??? Does the exhaust sound unnaturally quiet? Is there a whistle to it? You can disconnect it up front and test drive for an internally collapsed muffler or clogged convertor. There are tests like fuel pressure, datastream scan etc. A good independent professional tech will do better for you than the rookie of the week at the dealer. Of course, I know nothing about the particular shops and dealers in your area. Hello there .............. I have a 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac doing EXACTLY the same thing. Try to rev the motor and it chops off precisely at 3000 RPMs. I just swapped the fuel filter - no help. Have you figured yours out yet? I know fuel pumps and catalytic converters are expensive and I donn't want to swap them unless I am sure. I did notice there is a strip of discoloration in the metal around the muffler - looks heat induced and it's only a couple inches wide all the way around. Am I a dumbass or what????? This is going to sound really silly..........but here is what I found out. Took it to my dealer and he explained that the engine is "designed" to cut out at 3,000 rpm WHEN IN PARK. Basically, the computer governs the fuel so you can't rev and damage the engine. The truck runs fine in any gear..... I only noticed this one day when trying to warm the engine up. I felt like a fool. Truck is just doing what it is supposed to do. > Hello there .............. Also, the dealer said to take it out on the highway and "open her up"... If it cuts out, then bring it back..... Took it out and truck jumped from 2500 rpm to 3500 in the blink of an eye. Now I feel stupid too! LOL But my truck really did/does have a problem. It would not accelerate while driving down the road all of a sudden the other day. I was barely able to make it back home. Also the air conditioner cut out at the same time. I'm thinking the truck's brain box may cut out the air if there is another problem - hoping anyways. I decided to try the cheap things first and since it acted like a fuel filter I changed it out but I never drove the truck afterwards. Just tried to rev it up in the driveway. That's when I noticed the 3000 RPM clip. LOL So it may actually be fixed with the fuel filter .............. I'll take it out on the road later and see.
