How can you tell if you broke a piston or not?? Other than taking the
engine apart....

Exactly what kind of broke?
One check for noise the other check for compression.
You may use an endoscope to take a look through the spark plug hole into a
cylinder. This method they use to check valves inner sides and pistons.

And if you have a hole in the oil pan or the side of the block, shine a
flashlight right through that hole.

usually the engine stops running.
often accompanied by a loud bang.
try draining the oil.  If you have large chunks of stuff in it, you may
be the lucky owner of a very heavy doorstop.

<sigh>
So, what did you do to mom's car?
