944 ac acting weird- sometime works sometimes not

My ac has never been the best on my 85.5 944, but we had it serviced a
year ago and it was ok until yesterday.  One thing I had always noticed
was that when driving in long streaches of shade (tunnel, overhanging
trees) it worked better and when the right front tire ran through a
puddle it worked grreat.  Last night driving home it was running really
cold (it was dark.)  Then, we got hot hot hot air.  We got that to stop
but now the air will not even think about getting cool enough to keep
one comfortable.  I checked the 134 and topped it off, no luck.  I
understand there are 3 temp sensors that help the ac do its thing.  One
is in the dash, where are the other two?  I suspect and have read that
one is near the wheel well.  That makes sense with the puddle thing.
Can anyone help me with where the 2 are I cannot locate and what they
look like and how to test all of them or bypass them?
