1999 jeep wrangler 2.5L inline, 5 speed manual. 95K miles.  After
pushing my jeep hard to get up a hill while offroading, a loud knock
came from the engine.  The knock is slow while at idle and speeds up
along with the RPMs.  It sounds like it is in the lower end of the
engine but it is hard to tell.  Does anybody have any ideas what could
be clanking around before i do any additional damage.

Thank you for any help,
Scott

ideas

connecting rod ( piston ) is broken on one of the cylinders.  If it
doesn't perforate a cylinder wall soon, it may in the foreseeable
future.

Spun rod bearing. Bad piston rod/wrist pin.

None of it can be good. Sounds like it's time to open her up and have a
look around. No point driving until the inevitable 'major' failure. Git
'er done now!

A 'clank' is a totally different sound than a 'knock' and means totally
different things.  Please elaborate.

I don't know, but I recommend you find out before putting any load on
the engine.  Don't want to wipe out a crank before its time.  I suspect
rod or main bearings, but you may get lucky and find something else
wrong.  Disconnect all drive belts etc. and run it; if the noise doesn't
go away you will have to tear it down.  Sorry.

Could be a lot of things, including broken parts of external
engine accessories.    If it is a bad rod bearing, it will get
quieter under load.   If it is a dented oil pan it will bang
until the crank counterweight grinds its way through.

Find whatever it is as soon as possible, to avoid further
more expensive damage.

Good luck.

thanks Rodan for the help, The dented oil pan does make sense because
the knock seems to be coming from around in the oil pan maybe.  If this
is the case, how did I do this and what should i do next?

Sorry, I don't know.   I just can't imagine any way
an off-road vehicle could get a dent in its oil pan.

If it is dented, remove it and pound out the dent.

   Good luck.

First thing to find out is if it is internal or external.
Remove all belts and see if the noise is still present.

Cut open the oil filter and look for metal.  You will need some kind
of a cutter that does not saw the filter housing and create its own
metal particles.  The cutter I use has wheels.  There are cutters
based upon the visegrip principle that incorporate cutting wheels in a
length of chain.

If you see any glitter in the oil filter the motor is in serious
trouble.
