Recently I noticed that the engine seems louder. It sounds like a rough
race car engine. Is this something to do with the muffler? The sound
seems to be coming from the engine, not beneath the car. Any
suggestions will help.
Thanks

Perhaps someone stole your car and replaced it with a rough running
race car?  Seriously..  Noise can be made by anything on the car... No
one can diagnose "louder" who isn't looking at the car.  Take it to a
mechanic and have it looked at.

=======================
Check the flexible exhaust line under the front of the engine.
If that's cracked, also check the engine moving conrol rod (aka
"dogbone" engine mount near the left strut mount)
