Summary: No-Start problem strangley resolved after having the car towed

to the mechanic?!?

So I get home from the Thanksgiving break and I decide to move my car
out of the garage and pull my wife's in...and it won't start. The
engine turns over but the car won't start. I try the following:

1 - To jump start it...nothing happens. I take the battery in to have
it tested...some of the juice has been sucked try from my attempts to
start it. The battery gets charged up and Autozone tells me the battery

is good.

2 - I test all the spark plugs. The guy at Autozone sold me a nifty
little tool for doing this...I even turned out the lights in the garage

so I clearly see the spark jump. All 4 spark plugs were getting fire.

3 - I could hear the fuel injector starting after I turned on the key,
so I didn't there was a fuel problem (and BTW, I had a 1/2 tank of
gas). Just make sure I sprayed some eather into the engine's intake to
see if I could get the car to crank momentarily...no luck.

Finally I decided to have it towed to my mechanic...once they got it,
they reconnected the main vacuum hose to the engine and tried to start
it so they could see what I was talking about. The car started
instantly. They started it a couple of more times today to make sure it

wasn't some fluke.

The mechanic thinks the engine could have been flooded, but beyond that

he's scratching his head. I now have no confindence that my car will
start. I'd like to hold on to this car for another year of so. Anyone
have any idea what I should be looking for to possibly breakdown? TIA.

The engine cranks but it won't start.    Battery is fully charged
and tests okay at Autozone.       I tried:

1 - JUMP START:   Nothing happened.

2 - SPARK PLUG TEST:  I tested the plugs with an Autozone tool.
I clearly saw the sparks jump.   All 4 plugs are getting fire.

3 - STARTING FLUID:   I can hear the fuel injector starting after
I turn on the key (1/2 tank of gas).    I sprayed ether into the
intake to see if I could get the car to crank momentarily...no luck.

4 - TOW TO GARAGE    The mechanic reconnected the main
vacuum hose to the engine and the car started instantly.
He started it a couple of more times today to make sure it ran.
He thinks the engine could have been flooded, but is not sure.

Does anyone have any idea what I should be looking for to
possibly avoid a breakdown? TIA.

Will you please provide a little more information:

(Item 1)   What made the engine suddenly do nothing after
                   it was originally cranking?
(Item 2)   How does the AutoZone tool test the plugs?
(Item 3)   What made the engine fail to crank after it was
                   originally cranking?
(Item 4)   What main vacuum hose was reconnected and
when and why was it disconnected?

Rodan.

Sure

I'm not sure...the car started up fine when I moved it into our garage
on the 21st...when I tried to start the car the night of the 26th
(after coming back from Thanksgiving) the engine would turn over but
not start up. This issue continued until I took the car to the
mechanic.

> (Item 2)   How does the AutoZone tool test the plugs?

Maybe it doesn't test the plugs....just the plug wires. You insert this
tool into the plug wire and ground out one end on the engine block.
When you crank the car you can see a spark between the two pieces of
metal.

It never failed to cranks...maybe my original post confused crank with
starting up. The engine consistently made the grrrrr grrrrr grrrrrr
sound, but would never start up.

I unhooked the hose that runs from the air filter to the air intake
(where the throttle body is)...is this no the vacuum hose? I
disconnected it to spray the ether inside the intake, in hopes that the
car would start momentarily.

Thanks for your help Rodan. If I have any of my terminology wrong,
please correct me...I'm determined to learn more about how my car works
and the first part of that is knowing what everything under the hood is
called!
