My son drove about 500 miles last Friday night. About halfway he got
off the highway for a "pit stop" and when he came to a stop at the
light at the exit ramp the car stalled. He had to hold his foot down
on the gas to get it to start. For the rest of the trip he had to put
the car in neutral and give it a little gas to keep it from stalling at
stop lights and stop signs. There was an continues to be no "check
engine" light.
I have replaced the fuel filter, replaced the spark plugs (two were
burned quite badly), replaced the spark plug wires, cleaned the
throttle body including the passage to the IAC, removed the IAC and
cleaned it wtih throttle body cleaner (it was quite dirty on and around
the plunger that goes through the orifice), and replaced a couple of
vacuum lines (I found one off) and one dried and cracked.
Now...it will start cold with now trouble. It will idle pretty well.
However, when it sits and idles...or is driven and then stops...it
develops rough idle. It it idles under a load (with the a/c on) it
idles rough and stalls. Every time it stalls...you have to hold the
gas down to get it to start.
I have looked for a way to get the codes out, if there are any, without
going to a shop and having it scanned. I found one on line...but..it
didn't work.
Before I take it to a shop to have the codes pulled I am wondering if
anyone has any ideas.

Do you know why? It could be there's a problem with your car's
computer?

IMO, a scan tool would be helpful, if it will work. Pep Boys has ODB-II
code readers, for (IIRC) around $150? Lately, their Sunday ad has had
one for $200 that looks like it might also show sensor readings. If so,
that could be more helpful, since a mis-reading sensor wouldn't
necessarily show up as a code.
Or, you could go to a place like scantool.net and get something that
will interface between the ODB-II line and a PC. That also would give
you the sensor reading. I got one from Gore Research, which does work
with a Cavalier. It took them a long time to get around to shipping it.

Could be you have a bad head gasket? are you loosing coolant or oil?
Does the car make a rattling noise at the front of the motor? Maybe your
timing chain slipped?. My tensioner broke on my 2.2 and it bent all
eight of my valves.
I would also check fuel line pressue. Change the fuel filter if you have
not. And if you have a coil pack and waste spark, you might have a
failing coil pack.

23- manifold air temp to low
23- throttle position sensor to low
33- map sensor or circuit too high
32- egr system problem
72- theft system malfunction
The last one is interesting...the car doesn't have a "theft system".

Well, that an interesting one. I would clean the battery cables.
check the main ground to engine block. take off and clean any underhood grounds and
retorque there connections. and pull the computer harness off and inspect it and re seat
it too.
With that many bad codes, there must be some common element.
What's the battery voltage running and not running?

Today I replaced the EGR, MAP Sensor, and the Manifold Temperature
Sensor....and....the problem disappeared!
Thank you for all the help.
