Oh, for cripe's sake, just POST the blasted details already and quit
noodling around wasting everybody's electrons and insulting people that
ask for more details. Either someone will answer or someone won't. You
don't really know that a "diesel mechanic guru" (whatever that might be
in your mind) is even necessary, dozens of people on here might know the
answer if you'd just POST THE PROBLEM! A diesel is an engine not all
that different from any other. Not a box of black magic.

Sheesh.

But you're perfectly willing to waste even more more time typing idiotic
reasons NOT to just explain the problem. Yep, you're a real brain trust,
there, mister.

I'd be glad to think about any problem you post and offer any

Can't get fuel from the injection pump to the injectors.  Bled air from
lines up to pump.

Now that you have actually specified a problem....

Is the pump actually turning?  (not a silly question)

Do you get any fuel out of the top of the pump while cranking the
engine?  (pull the lines)

What pump is on this?  I think it's a Rossa, but if it's a Bosch or
Rochester, you may be able to pull the side plates and make sure the
pistons are moving and the rack isn't frozen.

What sort of fuel pressure do you have to the pump?

Have you bled the injector lines?

JW
buffalo - 11 Jan 2007 01:20 GMT
Yes, it is turning or I would have said that it is not.  To put it
succinctly, there is no fuel to the injectors.

I, too, believe it is a Rossa/Stanadyne.

Don't have a fuel pressure gauge -yet but, it was running with the same flow
to the pump as now as determined by eye (yes, I know but, it should at least
run with some amount of flow) and that was manually pumping it.

No, yours is not a silly suggestion when you suggest that the pump may not
be turning but, just look at the kiddies who have nothing to offer but
silly, childish remarks - Usenet is full of them.

Thanks.

If it was running when you pumped fuel to it but isn't now then you
either have a bad pump with low pressure, or you didn't bleed the entire
system. ANY air in a diesel will cause problems.

If the pump and the lines to the tank were dry and we must figure they
were because you had to bleed the tank line you say and no fuel is at
the injectors, then it naturally follows that the rest of the system is
dry....

I mean it sure don't take a rocket scientist for that one....

What kind of a foole are you anyway?  An entertaining one, that's for
sure.....

If the lines from the pump to the tank are dry and you had to prime the
pump so it was also dry, then the rest of the freaking lines are dry
too.  The fuel just syphons back to the tank as the air was introduced
or you used it all up when you ran out.

You are not the first fool to run a diesel out of fuel so the injectors
had to be bled you know, I have personally met a few over the years.

You SAID that you bled the lines to the injection pump, ergo there WAS
air near the injection pump and the potential for air getting into the pump.

You ASKED specifically about bleeding the pump, ergo YOU obviously think
there was/is air in the pump.

IF there was air in the pump, there's a 99% chance that the lines to the
injectors also have air bubbles in them.

But since you seem to know everything, just fix it yourself.

If you needed to bleed the line to the pump then you HAVE air in the
system. In a diesel ANY air in the system will cause it to fail to run.

If you cannot understand that then maybe you need some reading skills
yourself!

NOW HEAR AND UNDERSTAND THIS:

I have been working on this generator and had this and that off of it i.e,
filters, lift pump, hoses, input/output fuel hoses and during the course of
this, naturally, air gets into the system.  Anyone that works on diesels
understands that no air can be in the system although a little may be
tolerated to the point of rough running.  Air in the fuel circuit is a
no-no.

Now, run along and make up your own scenarios without asking for the facts.

Yes, you, too, can get my attention, Bob.  You seem to need me to recognize

Also, Cyberzl1, is there a bleed port on this pump?  I see a screw very near
the mounting base and I removed that but have not had a chance to
re-pressurize the system to see if fuel comes out of that screw hole.

My main question is how to bleed the air from the pump OR, getting the pump
to put out fuel to the injector lines.

If I can get over that hurdle with this pump, the rest will be alright.

Thanks

I don't know why I am helping you, since your level of contempt for
everyone is appalling...

Not exactly sure what screw you are referring to.  If it is
perpindicular to the axis of the pump it is the timing sight hole for
the pump.

Typically the way I bleed out a diesel system(merely my method, I make
no claims for it's true correctness) is as follows:

1)  Prime the fuel pump.
2)  Purge the fuel filter(s) by disconnecting supply line to injector
pump.  Pump till one gets a good stream of clean fuel with minimal
air/sputtering.
3) Reconnect injector pump line and crack the connector at the pump.
4)  Purge this line
5)  Disconnect injector lines
6)  Crank engine until fuel starts to come out of injector ports
7)  Connect the injector lines
8)  Loosen injector end of lines(unless your injectors have a bleed
line)
9)  Crank the engine and tighten injector lines as fuel begins to reach
the injectors.

At this point the engine may begin to start firing(maybe give it a shot
of ether to give it a boost).

The system won't be totally purged, but it will be "good enough".  It
will clear itself within 30sec or so of starting.

You could try pressurizing your tank to push fuel too.  An air nozzle
and a rag will suffice.  30# of air pressure in a tank will give your
fuel pump quite a boost.  It works well for those tought to prime
systems.

How are your filters?  What looks ok with no backpressure may not be
enough pressure/flow in operation.

Is your fuel pump weak?  See above.

JW
buffalo - 11 Jan 2007 06:28 GMT
Okay, Cyberzl1,

I have no contempt for you.  You say that I have contempt for everyone  and
certainly everyone would include you.  Sigh.

I know how to bleed a diesel.  I do not know how to bleed this particular
pump.

This Onan has a lift fuel pump that feeds the two filters (primary and
secondary).

I can simply disregard all of this nattering and do it the conventional way.
However, I was ASSUMING that after bleeding the two fuel filters, that I
could further pump fuel to the injector pump and BLEED IT without doing the
inj. lines just yet.

Let's cut to the chase; as I said before, fuel is not coming out of the inj.
pump under any conditions.  Air is out of everthing but no fuel from the
pump.  I was assuming an air lock in the inj. pump.

Digressing to the contempt.  This place has a reputation of a number
(NOTICE: NOT ALL) idiots on here who are completely unqualified to give
advice.  They are qualified to show their a.s.

Are you a 'ham'?

It really sounds to me like your inj. pump has problems.  What is the
history of the pump?  Engine?  Have you ever had it running, or is this
a salvage project?

I had a similar problem recently, and the pump turned out to be bad.  I
couldn't get the pump to prime, no matter what.  Finally starting
looking at it and the drive cam for the rack had broken(Rochester
pump).  That's why I asked if the pump was turning.  Just because the
drive gear is turning, doesn't mean that everything in the pump is
turning.

> Digressing to the contempt.  This place has a reputation of a number
> (NOTICE: NOT ALL) idiots on here who are completely unqualified to give

But you still would have saved a day if you would have just stated your
problem right up front.  ANY advice you recieve via Usenet is worth
what you paid for it.  It's up to you to filter it.

By giving everyone a hard time about their "qualifications" before even
asking a real question is just being belligerent.  It doesn't gain you
anything.  Ask the question.  If you get a nonsense answer, then don't
follow their advice.

> Are you a 'ham'?

Nope.  But I do know several.  I have just never found the time to get
my license.  Now even easier as their is no Morse req.  Someday.
buffalo - 11 Jan 2007 17:57 GMT
Cyberzl1,

I really think that my posts are not being read in their entirety.  Early
on, I said that it had run for ~15 seconds and then shut down.

I have no history on any part of the unit other than it has a total of 500
hours.

If this 'plug/screw' at the base of the pump is for looking inside for
timing purposes, it is mighty small.  Maybe there is a 'fixture' such as a
pin that is to be inserted in order to time it?

Now, to the contempt again:  Usenet is full of wannabe this or that's.  They
are time wasters who love to shotgun or guess at a problem in order to look
like they know what they are doing.  Been there too many times and it
usually comes to pass that the person is just barely qualified to turn on
his computer.

I really do like to help folks solve a problem.   NOT TO LOOK GOOD, as is
obvious, I could care less how I appear but, to help them get something
going gives me a warm feeling.

When I do this, I always state my qualifications up front so that they know
that I have the knowledge and experience to help them and not just leading
them down some path and they eventually find that I was shotgunning it.
Also, although they would never admit it, there are many parts changers in

Mike Romain,

You are just astounding.  Even a whipped dog eventually realizes that they
are beaten.

Now, you call me a liar.  Perhaps but, exactly what have I lied about.

Now, make a fool of yourself once more.

You must be so used  to it that it really doesn't bother you anymore.   You

Are you 'really' that dense?  I guess you must be seeing as you made

Yes, I did say that.  However, there has been some posting problems and that
may not have made it.  Check around and you will see that has been common
for the last.....

However, genius, why is it that you missed this, which did get posted:
.......it was running with the same flow
to the pump as now .......?

You know, Romain, if you do this type of work, it is a darned good thing
that your customers don't read this group.  Each and every time that you
post, you step in your own drivel.

You are just unbelievably wrong at every turn.

Bullshit!  You screwed up there bud, that's all there is too it.

Didn't miss that at all!  That is one reason I figured you bled part of
the circuit and forgot to let the air out of the injectors.  Pretty
normal for someone who doesn't really appreciate why an air locked
diesel is a pain in the butt....

No 'bullshit' about it, kid.  Check for yourself.

You figured Hell!  You can't even keep up with the thread much less look
into your crystal ball and figure that I did this and figure that I did
that.  If you had kept up, you wouldn't have to guess at all but then, that
is why you are a parts changer and nothing more.  You don't have the
intellect to systematically reduce a problem down to its logical conclusion
based on symptoms and logic so, you GUESS.  Again, just like you figured
that I did or didn't do this.  Hell, kid, why not just ask?

When did you say this?  I just searched the whole thread again, and
never found this little tidbit.

This doesn't really help a whole lot.  Means you ran out of fuel.  Big
deal, we knew that already.

You weren't very specific, so I guessed.  Either way, I don't think it
is a bleed screw.  Any bleeder would be near the top of the pump.
Somewhere above the high pressure section of the pump.

I agree.  Disappointed they did away with that requirement as well.  I
once knew how, but have long since forgotten.

Yes, but not a Rossa/Stanadyne.  Bosch/Rochester bank style pumps.  I
don't have the equipment to do it now.  Still know a few guys that do,
but most are pretty much retired.
buffalo - 12 Jan 2007 05:09 GMT
Man, oh man!  Cyberzl1, you or anyone else on here don't know zilch unless I
told you.

You say that you knew that I ran out of fuel.  What is it with you guys?  I
never said that I ran out of fuel - NEVER.  That is something that you
either read from one the tin-foil brigade that imagines they see 'dead
people' while I am seeing brain-dead people or you simply dreamed that one
up.

America is in real, bad trouble.  The dumbing down process is almost
complete.

Umm.  Then why didnt' it run.  A diesel is pretty simple(in a basic
sense).  If you have fuel in the cylinder it will run.

I didn't say your fuel tank was empty.  But YOU yourself said that you
were not getting fuel out of the injection pump.  IN OTHER WORDS, you
were out of fuel.  Whether there was some in the rest of the system is
pretty much irrelevent.

>Not one of you except Cyberzl1 has really tried to help.  Even
Cyberzl1 is

Got nothing to do with that.  I pretty much just think you are a
jackass, but in spite of that, still felt like trying to help you.  But
since you have been so grateful for that, see if that ever happens
again.
buffalo - 12 Jan 2007 18:44 GMT
Well, et tu, 'eh?

Yes, you belong here, alright.  As it becomes apparent that you can't follow
this thread either.  When you say that if  you have fuel in the cylinder, it
will run", is ASSUMING way too much.  But, ASSumptions seem to be the norm
here.

I said that no fuel was coming from the injection pump, yes, that is true.
However, to assume that the pump is out of fuel is beyond stupid.

Yes, you started out okay on this thread but it slowly became apparent that
you were just not keeping up with ALL of the information that was presented.

Let me be clear here, you haven't helped.  Now I know that hurts your
feelings but the truth is is that you and I have discussed a few things but
they did not lead to any solution in any way.  Then, you began slipping and
not retaining the information.

No one is obligated to help anyone.  Truthfully, I would not help me either.
BUT ONLY IF I LOOKED AT MY POSTS ON THE SURFACE WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT HAS
HAPPENED.   I came here to bat some data around on a problem that I was
having and asked if there were any diesel gurus here and all sorts of clowns
slithered out of the depths.
All sorts of totally unprofessional posts were made without so much as the
posters knowing what the hell they were talking about.  One said junk it,
another asked if it was out of fuel and many other stupid remarks, all
designed to get a 'rise' out of the regulars.

Nope, no thank you, I will never post in here again and expect any sort of
an intelligent and rational discussion to result from it.

I may post here and try to help someone else, but from the posts that I have
seen, there is not one person on here that could call themselves a qualified
mechanic or automotive guru.  I do suspect that there are those that are
remaining silent, that ARE qualified but the idiots have created a cesspool
and they don't want to sully themselves.

Beam me up.

Look, buffalo.. All the people here are usually happy to help.

Your initial approach was perceived as being rather hostile.  I think that
is
what several were trying to tell you.

And your posts got more and more hostile.

The whole situation could have been avoided, and I sincerely wish it had.

Yes, it could have been avoid but ONLY if I sat back and took the bullshit
comments.

you are just like them.

Just for fun though, which beginning posts did YOU find hostile?  I am

Your very first post, where you took the position that most here were
uneducated dumbasses,
was hostile.

I did not respond.  I am  a semiprofessional, hobbyist, mechanic, meaning
that I have
worked professionally in the past, but am only in it as a hobby now.

I know a fair amount about diesel engines, but am certainly not a guru.
Almost
everyone here would be pleased to help. We are all enthusiasts, and some are
more
professional than others.  People like Ian, Aarcuda, and Comboverfish are
highly
qualified and presently are employed in the field.  And there are others as
well.

I have known these people for a long long time, and can say that they are
quality
folks.

I have known Mike Romain online and have a considerable respect for him.

Lets just let it subside. You have fixed your diesel, now, in whatever
fashion.
I would welcome you to contribute when possible, and lets let the animosity
subside.
buffalo - 13 Jan 2007 04:01 GMT
HLS,

I am a firm believer in that old saw that if you can't take the answer,
don't ask the question.

I certainly can take the answer and I want to thank you for your candor.
Here we go, though; my very first post had nothing whatsoever suggesting
that I thought most here were dumbasses.  It didn't take me very long to
find that they were or, those who posted were.

If you think that my asking if there were any diesel wizards here was
hostile, I just don't get it.  How is someone supposed to know anything
without asking?  My assumption, although perhaps incorrect is that most here
are gasoline engine types and that is why I asked about diesel types.

Further,  if you get around Usenet very much, you will understand that there
are a plethora of 'wannabes' that will proffer a bunch of b.s. and waste the
person's time trying to make themselves look good or appear as if they know
something - anything.  It is very common.  All you have to do is to look
around the newsgroups.

As it turned out, since the above types started the b.s., I did waste time
and I did become hostile but I surely was not in the beginning.

I also note that your showering of accolades to a few here, reminds me of
Aunt Gertrude or whomever, who swoons and titters about how Dr. Such and
such is such a good and competent physician while all that she is basing
this on is his nice bedside manner.

Anyway, thanks for the input but I suggest that you carry some baggage if
you think my very first post was hostile.

You appear to know a lot about Usenet...or at least that's what
you want us to think.  In that case, you should already know that
the best way to ask a question is to simply lay out all the facts,
and then take a look at the answers and weed out the ones that
aren't helpful or relevent.  Instead...you start out by asking an
almost unanswerable question....."who's a diesel guru".

See...you know the score.  So what do you do?  Come in and try
to stir the sh.t up!  You got what you deserved.  Even the fellow that
was "attempting" to help you thought better of it after awhile.

But it did make for an interesting newsgroup diversion.  I can only
hope that more maggots like you will stumble into these newsgroups

"Who here can fix my problem? Now mind you, I'm not going to TELL you
the problem or even all the symptoms, I'm going to quiz you and dribble
out one or two clues at a time and see how long you'll play." Do you
ever get people that walk into your shop and play you that way

belligerant jerk through the anonymity of a keyboard and internet
connection.

I have to say I'm kinda proud of the way this group as a whole

damnfool, but then he'd just have changed sock-puppet names and tried

Why dintcha just SAY so yesterday?

Crack open a fitting at each injector and bleed the injector lines. If
you have air bubbles in the injector lines, the pump's "shot" on each
injection stroke is not enough to compress the bubble enough to force it
out and into the cylinder when the cylinder is under compression. So the
bubble just compresses and re-expands without actually going anywhere.
Cracking the line open at the injector allows the injection pump to
force the air out while working only against atmospheric pressure.

Hey, genius, I don't need the time of day.  Besides, most on here, by what
they have demonstrated, are not capable of telling time.  They certainly are
not a mature and educated lot.

Ever heard the term 'shuffle off to Buffalo?'

> Btw, why did you think a medical condition was involved?

Because your subject line asks;  "Any diesel -mechanic- gurus on
here?"
If you were asking for a diesel guru, he appropriate term would
be; 'Any diesel gurus on here?'
buffalo - 12 Jan 2007 05:00 GMT
You guys are simply beyond hilarity.  You, arrcuda deign to lecture me about
my English and grammar yet, you don't know the meaning of 'term' nor,
'phrase'.

You certainly cannot understand that it would be a waste using proper
grammar in here.  Hell, you don't even understand the words that you,
yourself use.

Asking for a 'diesel mechanic guru, -are you listening genius- is, in fact,
proper.  The general PHRASE that you suggest, could be construed to be a
physicist, a chemist and so on.

Folks, quit showing just how damned dumb and stupid that you really are.

Ever heard the adage:  "Better to be silent and thought a fool that to open
your mouth and prove it?"

Like the equally hilarious term or phrase "hot water heater?"

I find it hard to believe that someone capable of time travel
would have a problem with something as simple as a diesel engine.

It would be if (for instance) one were shopping for a gift for a
diesel mechanic and didn't know what to get him/her.

Because repairing diesel engines is a little bit of physics, a
little bit of chemistry.
But you'd probably be better off seeking a psychiatrist instead
of a physicist or chemist...

Well, the dumb and stupid ones aren't stuck with an engine that
won't run.

Heard about it?  Hell, you gave us front row seats to the
Broadway show.

To prove my point that no one keeps up:
"Well, the dumb and stupid ones aren't stuck with an engine that
won't run."

I don't have an engine that won't run.  I already took care of that but
don't let facts get in your way.

I find it funny that you and others just cannot quit trying to get the best
'jab'.

However, keep it up, I will eventually tire of the parade.

Then what was the purpose of your original post?

Then what was the purpose of your original post?

I'm not trying to get the best jab, I'm trying to make sense of
your situation.
Again, what was the purpose of your original post?

aarcuda,

I really think that this is beyond you.

Go back to Bevis and Butthead.

Who?

It tells much about you, aarcuda, that every post from you from the
beginning of your posts, has been nothing but sarcasm.  Not one helpful
thing was said.  Typical of this group's regulars.

Nate,

I don't want or need your help.  Show me where I asked for it?

Hard to be helpful if I can't tell whether you're having trouble
with a diesel mechanic or a diesel generator.

> Typical of this group's regulars.

You've read the hundreds of thousands of posts archived in this
newsgroup?
buffalo - 14 Jan 2007 00:48 GMT
aarcuda,

It may take you a long time to pick up and study a red-hot horseshoe but, I
can tell it is hot just by the glow.

One does not have to read about each and every murder victim to know that
Ted Bundy was a bad man.

Although, I have been here for years and seen much stupid advice given, I do
not have to read thousands of posts to know that a handful on here are just
plain dumb though, they would never believe that about themselves.
