I have 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera w/ V6 engine. Two days ago, I get
up and my car is idling and won't start. Not knowing much about cars, I
called by roadside assistance tried to have the battery jumped. Nothing
happened. So I had the car towed to a mechanic and they ran tests and
told me I had a bad fuel pump. I ended up paying $476 for parts and
labor. The next day I drove my car home and it works fine. The next
morning I start my car go to work and it works fine. When I get off
work, my car is dead no idling, no nothing. I have the car towed again
to my house because the orginial place where i took it before was
closed. Anyway, This morning I was going to have it towed back to the
mechanic, to find out why my car quit just one day after it was
supposedly fixed. When the tow guy came, he being a little
knowledgeable about cars, says I only had a loose starter wire..... He
tightened it and it runs fine.
Basically, Was anything ever wrong with my fuel pump? Did I tricked out
of $500 dollars? Do think I would have a case if I was to sue? How
would I argue my case? What are the symtoms of a bad fuel pump?
Any or all answers will be VERY MUCH appreciated.....Thanks
You 'really' need to do a much better job of describing what was going
on first...
If it was a loose starter wire, the engine would not turn over when you
turn the key. A boost might help jump the loose connection to get you
going. This would 'not' indicate a bad fuel pump.
If you have a bad fuel pump, the engine will turn over just fine when
you turn the key, it just won't start up.
If it was the second case, you would lose in court. If it was the first
case, you would have a case for a rip off.

the first time, the engine was turning over but it wouldn't
start........( I'm guessing by 'engine turning over' you mean the car
making the idling sound but not starting up)
The second time ,the day after the fuel pump was replaced, I turned the
key and nothing happened, the car was completely dead. I got a jump
this time also, but the lights only flickered just a little bit. Power
locks, windows, and everything electric was dead in the car.
Does this clarify the situation? thanks.........

Yes.
When folks say 'idling' that implies the engine is running under it's
own power.
The other noise is 'starter noise' with the engine turning over. Or
better said I guess is 'the starter turns the engine over, but it won't
fire up or run'.
When they replaced the likely dead fuel pump, they were supposed to
disconnect a battery terminal to be safe. It almost sounds like they
forgot to tighten it back down after the work.
If this is the case, you might be able to nail them for the service
call, otherwise I would just think sloppy workmanship...
