My power window is not working, the switch activates the motor and you
can hear the mechanism moving inside. The window is up now. Is there
likely something broken and just disconnected. Is there any parts I
should pick up before I take it apart as this is my only vehicle and I
don't want to drive to town with the window open and 0 F temperatures
outside. Thanks

A lot of things could be wrong.  But pop the door panel out immediately
and get in there.  At LEAST you should be able to rotate the thing by
hand and close the window.  In 0F weather you're better off with the window
stuck closed than stuck open.

The gearbox on the motor has a lot of plastic stuff in it that can break,
and the toothed rod can break as well.  No matter what, though, you should
still be able to figure out a way to close it for a while until you can
get it done right.

Pick up a new window regulator.  The motor can be switched
between the old and the new.  Common failure.

My '99 broke a cable in the driver's side power window mechanism last
winter. My window was down.

Gm sells the whole assembly for like $300. It includes the motor, tracks
and cables.

IF you can find a way to swag the ends of the steel cable with the
proper shape the cables could probably be replaced individually. I was
unsuccessful finding parts to just fix the broken cable and replaced the
whole assembly. That job was a 20 minute deal as the assembly comes out
very easy one the door panel is removed

I just removed it, the cable is broken. The dealer and aftermarket
sells the complete unit for $160.00 Canadian. I think I will just get
the new one as the drum system looks a little complicated even if I
did manage to fix the cable. Is there any fine adjustment when
reassembling the regulator to the window and door or just bolt it in.

It just bolts back in. No fine adjustment.

Thinking about it, it was the winter of 2004 that mine broke. Glad to
hear that the price has come down as I can hear the cable
rubbing/fraying in the "wind up drum" again and will have to do the job
again soon I am sure.
