So here is my story,
On wednesday I left work, picked up the g/f and went to the grocery
store. i went back out and my wonderful car would not start. i thought
that it was the vattery so i pulled out my good ol booster pack,
hooked it up and tried starting it again...nothing. so i ended up
leaving it in that parking lot. by then it was about 8pm. i returned
the next morning to get some stuff out and tried to start it again.
but this time it worked. i couldnt move it at the time but came back
about 2 hours later and drove it to my office. then drove it around 2
hours after that. then left work and it wouldnt start. that was
yesterday. so today i have tried about every two hours to start it and
get nothing but a clicking noise and the hiss of the fuel pump. the
lights, radio, wipers, heater fan, everything electrical works. i
think it may be the starter but dont want it to be... any insight on
this one folks?

I had a similar problem on a different car. Turned out that the starter
itself was working itself loose. Found that out as I was replacing it
with another starter.

Had a similar problem with '91 Lincoln- turned out to be a bad ground due
to the way the starter was wired and corrosion getting to it. The
replacement starter included a different connector and instructions for
modifying the wiring.

I would clean and check the battery cable connections at both ends
first.  If this doesn't help then you are probably on the right track
with thinking it is a bad starter.

1) battery cables/connections. Connection at the starter too.
2) battery/alternator is dying slowly.
3) starter is dying.

Clean the connections, charge the battery. try again. If it works then it
might be a good idea to make sure the battery is charging ok. Another
thing to check might be the current draw of the starter. It might be on
it's way out.

The starter is not in the greatest spot on that car's mazda twin, but it
can be replaced without dismantaling a bunch of stuff as I recall.

Anyway, connections are usually the problem before any of the parts.
