1987 Lincoln Town Car. Is there anyway to replace the heater core
without removing the entire dash?
Also when I go from air conditioning back to heat I briefly smell
radiator fluid. Since heat and AC are separate systems what could cause
that?
A man who worked at a Ford assembly plant says it takes just a few
minutes to install a dash unit at the factory.
It seems like stupid design when you have to pay for 7 or more hours of
labor just to take out a simple heater core. My shop says some cars
require 12 hours labor just to get the heater core out.
When the dash is taken in and out on a older car, is there a significant
chance that wires and vacuum tubes will get messed up and not work
right?

I just did a 1989 Grand Marquis last year, should be pretty similar. It
was a bear. Expect to take the dash at least most of the way out of the
car; we were able to do the job without pulling the steering column.
If possible, buy the part after you have the old part out (i.e. while
the dash is disassembled); my car had the heater core and plenum from
a 1988 in it, the cores weren't even similar in size. The rubber they
encase the core in is a one-piece assembly; I made the mistake of
tearing it to get the core out and reassembly was a pain.
