41 Generator field not switching properly

Note there's a different error code for no output:

47 Charging system voltage too low

even though there's nothing charging the battery most of the time.
Intermittently it seems as though the battery is charging *almost* to
the point on the dashboard voltmeter where it usually sits; the
difference is small but noticeable, about 1/4 volt.

Before I declare the alternator dead, any experience with this that
says otherwise?

Someone PLEASE tell me there isn't a voltage regulator inside the
Powertrain Control Module.

Are you going to wait until you are satisfied that everyone has been
given ample opportunity to respond with a comforting negative, or can
I just disappoint you now and tell you that the PCM controls
alternator output?

I picked a good time to read this article. :) The problem was nothing
more than bad connections at the alternator. DeOxit RULES!

You may want to also pack the connections with dielectric grease so that
they stay good.

DeoxIT now makes a line of greases.  On these types of connections use
DeoxIT first then their grease.
Great stuff.
