I always heard that French cars were super reliable.

As long as the notion of 'super reliable' does not include the requirement
that the car actually start or run, that is probably correct.

My friend Gerald spent an afternoon with a Citroen that would not start.
At some point, he threw his tools down on the floor and walked out, shouting
"It doesn't work... it doesn't work because it's French."

I heard the following dialogue at an engineering conference this fall:
"The most reliable car is the Trabant. There is nothing to fail... there
is no oil pump, no radiator, no fuel pump, no valve train. It is very
reliable because there's nothing on the engine to break," said the first
fellow.
"Except.... you know... sometimes they catch fire," his friend added.
"Oh yes," the first guy continued, "you have to carry a fire extinguisher
because they catch fire sometimes. But other than that, they are very
reliable."
