Changed out the plugs, wires, cap, & rotor. Still have the problem on
occasion. When I first purchased the vehicle, I swapped out the air
filter with a fram air filter. I wouldn't think this would cause the
problem, but I don't recall having the problem before I changed the
air filter. Unfortunately, I just thought of it now.. thoughts? The
air filter looks clean.

I would take some spray electronic contact cleaner and open and spray
down the connection on the throttle body. There is an idle control and
a throttle position sensor there that can and do get dirty connections
and can cause strange cold running issues first, then get worse.
There is also a CPS on the top drivers side bell housing that also can
get a dirty connection, but that one, when dirty usually causes stalls.

Will do that. Thanks for the tip. I'll follow up here if it fixes
the problem.

followed your advice. seemed to run fine for a while but today when I
took it out, i started off it lost most of it's power, knocked 3 or 4
times, then we were good to go again. drove fine the rest of the
trip. i think this is the first time i have ever heard knocking...

maybe i shouldn't have said "knock".. maybe it was a misfire... sound
was like boom boom boom..then it started running ok again when i got
off then gas waiting a second or two, then accelerated again.

The fact it changes after a simple connection clean implies maybe more
sensors also need a clean or maybe a different cleaning solution is
needed to me.

Sounds like fuel problem to me have you check your fuel filter?

Not many folks want to drop the fuel tank and replace the pump and
filter unit just for a wild guess that doesn't match the symptoms.
Bad fuel pump filter mean no top end normally.....

It was not a guess I have a old mercedes I been working on for the
last few years and it use to take 30 secs to a 1 minute before it will
fully start up and the problem was the fuel filter and it starts right
up and it has a lot more power I did not know the fuel filter was in
that bad of shape. Sorry if I gave any of you the wrong idea Thanks

It's my understanding that the 97 wranglers have the filter built into
the fuel tank.. so yea, it would be a bigger undertaking than usual to
swap out the filter on the jeep.. otherwise I probably would do that.
Hey Larry.. that is exactly what I do to quickly fix the issue..
otherwise i just wait about 5 seconds and things clear up and i'm ok.
If you have been working on this for at least 5 yrs.. I'm not too
confident that I will fix the issue now.. darn. I'll keep trying
things and post if I do find out something.
What do you guys think about a bad (or going bad) oxygen sensor? How
about a bad fuel pump? I wouldn't know how to test either
one..probably would have to take it in.
Thanks,
Nate
