Just spent $500 for complete brake job. Everything needed to be
replaced.  rotors, calipers, pads, shoes, rear drums.
I noticed that the rotors and drums were $40/each Seems low.
Im wondering if they are made in China.

Probably. I just priced some rotors for my pickup from a national
chain store. He quoted me a price and I then told him that I did not
want rotors made in China. He told me to follow him to the area of the
store where the rotors were stored to see if the ones I needed were
made in China. On the way back there I looked at all the shelves of
rotors that they had in stock. They were all made in China. The better
ones that were shown in their catalog would have to be ordered and
would take a day or two to get.
I left the store without purchasing any, but it will be getting harder
and harder to find an American made rotor. I'm pretty sure that a
product can be made elsewhere and labeled "Made in USA" if they add
the finishing touches to it, like adding a decal or adding a finish to
it.
On a similar note, I got two front wheel bearings for a Taurus lately.
They were branded "National", a well respected name. The first one I
looked at was American made and was finely casted and machined. The
other box I opened was made in Korea and both the finish and machining
was poor. Not only that, but it was defective right out of the box.
You could put both bearings side by side and could tell that the
Korean one was not assembled properly. I had them order another one
and it, too, was Korean made, but at least it was properly put
together. Guess what? After about a month, the Korean made bearing
failed. But who cares.....the manufacturer was obviously saving a few
bucks by making them overseas.
