I've seen people here say that Autozone rents vacuum pumps (the type for
pumping down A/C). What's the magic incantation to get one? I stopped by
a store the other day and the counter guy tried everything possible on
the computer, but couldn't find whatever he might have needed to find or
rent a pump.

That AZ may not have one.

Go to http://www.autozone.com

it will ask for your zip and give you a list of stores, and what each one
has for loaner tools.

Hm. They don't show much of anything that I can see, even the leak
detectors mentioned in
<news:44dca558$0$23710$a82e2bb9@reader.athenanews.com>. Clutch tools and
orifice tube tools.

I don't think they rent vacuum pumps for A/C.  They do however rent
hand held vacuum pumps for checking things like EGR and evap systems.
However It's taken me a while to get the message to the guy as far as
what a handhelp vacuum pump was.

Hmmm...lets see.  The clerk indicated that Autozone doesn't rent that
tool and he verified that such a transaction is not in the computer.
Was there something about the word no that was not clear?

No, he indicated that he couldn't find any information on the computer
about renting that tool.

The clerk himself was unclear on whether the absence of data had any
meaning, and since he has more experience with the workings of Autozone,
I didn't second-guess him.
