My friend is stumped. He has a 94 Escort that came to him with a serp
belt that snapped off and broke 1 wire off of the crank sensor plug
which has been reattached.
The problem now is when you crank the motor over it will not fire.
BUT, he noticed if he would bump the engine with the key and slightly
move the key back a little it'll get spark & fire up and run just fine
until you shut the motor off.
Do you think this is an ignition switch related problem, or something
to do with the belt snapping off and hitting wires?

Could be a bad ignition switch. Could be the controller is just allowing
a little spark in when it loses power too.

Dunno, what does a voltmeter on the coil do when you try this?
What is the resistance across the crank sensor?

What I can tell you is that their is no power to the coil or injectors
unless you bump the ignition and move the key back slightly after
bumping it'll ignite & run.
I'll have to check the resistance on the crank sensor and get back to
you.

Is there power to anything? Is there power at the ECU? If there is no
power at the ECU unless the key is held in a weird position, you need
to look at the key switch.

Update: I talked to my buddy and he's telling me he check for current
to the coil, and it has current to the coil when the ignition switch
is in the off position. When it's in the on or start position the coil
doesn't have power.

I was just told a new ignition switch from Ford was put on. Problem
still exists.. Anything else??

I have had this experience with older fords and it was the ignition
module. The crank circuit in the module would quit but the run sircuit
still worked. As long as when the key was released at the right time
they would start. There was no spark in the srank position but there
was in run.

Come to find out the ignition module was also replaced. He hopes he
didn't get a defective module. Could it be something else?

Problem fixed. It appeard that when the serpentine belt broke off and
pulled the wires from the crank sensor, it also broke the wires
internally in the harness. Once he physically replaced part of the
harness, the problem is now fixed.

It was put on very incorrectly if the problem described above exists.
It's entirely possible the original problem is different and your buddy
created a new one by putting the new ignition switch on.
