Transmission Damage Due To Wrong Fluid

Greetings!

Assuming that I have a WC T5, is it possible that the use of 70W gear
oil in the transmission could lead to transmission noise or damage? I
have noticed a particular noise from the transmission whenever the
vehicle is in motion above about 30 MPH. The vehicle is driven mostly
on highways and the noise started after a few months. Assuming I
replace the fluid with ATF and there is no damage might the noise go
away?

Thanks for your advice.

My T5 can take either gear oil (summer) or ATF (winter), what it is
extremely picky on is the GL rating.

If I use a GL5 'compatible' gear oil, the syncros stop working after a
short while.  If I then go back to a plain GL3, my T5 purrs again.

Mine is an older one in an 86 Jeep, The Borg Warner T5, not the WC one
with the plastic (I think).

I found some semi synthetic GL3 that is working well even in the real
cold (-40).
