All,
In the coming weeks I plan on replacing the brakes all the way around
on my wifes 1996 Buick Regal. We got this car after the brakes were
replaced and a brake light has been on ever since we got possession, 2
yrs ago, even with a new set of brakes installed by the previous
owner. The person who did the brakes originally had never done an ABS
set of brakes before. I have only done one set of ABS brakes before
myself but I have done more then enough non ABS brakes jobs in my
life. The previous owner is family.
Anyways from my reading I am guessing that they somehow damaged one of
the wheel sensors, and I will confirm this with a reader (autozone?)
before I get started. I am planning on replacing the rotors and all
pads all the way around as this is my wifes car and the car has almost
175,000 miles on it. The previous owner did a 150 mile daily commute
by expressway. The car runs good but that many miles starts to make me
think how much should I invest in this thing.
So my question are as follows;
Is the wheel sensor the most likely cause of this light?
(My wife and I are both college students and also I am cheap by
nature) :)
As these sensors seems very $$$, is there a quick way to test these
sensors if I was in a junkyard situation looking for one? Can I get
one from a yard?
Also is there any tidbits of information I should know about this car
or ABS brakes before I get started.
Thanks,
Chris

I recently performed a brake job on the same year and model.
The caliper bracket bolts (T60 Torx, use at least a 1/2" drive
quality tool such as an SKT45560, ~$16, as its torque value,
with Loctite, is > 100 ft/lbs when correctly installed) must be
pulled to remove the front rotors.

Thanks for the tip.
I have a nice set of Torx from a previous chevy I had with a decent
craftsman breaker bar.
Did you have any issues with the Sensors?
Thanks,
Chris

You're welcome.
A T60 wasn't in my 3/8" set and that degree of torque,
particularly Loctite secured, wouldn't seem prudent (in
my estimation).with that drive size.
I had no issues with the sensors.
PS This cross-posted reply may elicit additional or
more worthy responses, hope you don't mind.

The brake light is on or the ABS light is on? If it is the ABS light
have the codes read and see what the problem is. If the brake light
is on I would check the parking brake warning mechanism or the
hydraulic system.

Steve,
Thanks,
I will have to check that closer. Currently the car is parked in the
garage and my wifes driving my 07 Ion.
I belive it is the ABS. I started hearing some light grinding in the
rear so I told her to park it till I have a chance to look at it this
weekend or next.
Thanks,
Chris

Both indicator warning lights are below the tachometer needle.
The ABS is an amber color on the left side with those initials in
the center of a circle, the parking/conventional brake is a red
color to its right with the letter "P" and "!" (an exclamation point)
in the centers of two seperate circles.
