Mazda B 2500 (1998) with a grinding noise

Hi all,

I have a 1998 4 Cylinder Mazda B 2500 extended cab (made by ford, as I
understand it).

When I am driving, I get a grinding noise from the back/underside,
that sounds almost like a stripped gear or when you are trying to use
a drill on a screw and the head of the screw starts stripping, sort of
like that.

It happens most often when starting off, but happens while in gear,
out of gear, with the clutch in or out.

I don't feel anything, except maybe a slight vibration in the truck,
but nothing big.  In other words, it does not seem to affect the
acceleration/deceleration, brakes, or feel like the transmission is
slipping or anything

Any ideas?

I'm going to assume this truck is RWD? If it only happens when the
vehicle is in motion, it could be the rear differential. Check the
diff oil recently?

That would be my first guess.  Wouldn't hurt to put it up on jackstands
and rotate the wheels by hand and see where the sound is coming from.
