I have a 92 ford escort with 149k on it with a 1.9l motor. Its a 5
speed and a very good running car. I have a problem when I put it into
5th gear sometimes it will NOT let me take it out. Almost feels like
something is blocking it from coming out. This is happening more and
more over the last several weeks. I have had to start out several time
in 5th gear just to get moving and this is burning out the clutch. Is
it hard to replace a clutch in this car? I don't want to spend a bunch
of money taken it to a dealer when the car is only worth about $1500.

Can any one help me???

Don't use 5th.

Check out the clutch release cylinder before you replace the clutch.

You can shift without the clutch if you match revs. Basically you
modulate the accelerator until the car is neither accelerating nor
decelerating so there is no load on the transmission. With a gentle
pressure on the shifter, it should come out of gear. If it does, you
have a clutch issue. If it still does not come out of gear, you
probably have a linkage issue.

I doubt it's the clutch, or you'd see this in all gears. I'd exhaust
all other possibilities before blaming the clutch.

I also would steer clear of any dealerships. For a car out of
warranty, you'll save a bundle by using an independent mechanic.
