I have a 1994 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup and I'm suspecting the fan is not
working properly. Driving to and from work the engine smells a hot and
I'm suspecting the fan is not working well when driving in stop and go
traffic at the end of my trip.
How can I evaluate the condition of the clutch fan?
Can I service it myself or do you advise buying a replacement?
Thanks,
Charlie

how hot is it? i found that on a gm product if the heat gauge goes
over about 3/8 of the way then that is normal. if it goes over 1/2 way
then it is too hot. if it is over heating then usually it needs a new
thermostat rather than a new fan clutch.

With a hot 'off' engine try to hand spin the fan. If it spins, the
clutch is done. Same for a shutdown when hot. If you watch the fan
when someone shuts off the 'hot' engine, a good clutch will stop the fan
almost instantly. If the fan keeps on spinning, the clutch is done.
