If the manual recommends 10-30, can I use a lighter
syn oil as a replacement (ease of starting in cold weather and
mileage)?  And if I can, how light can I go.

I see zero weight oil.  Who uses that?

Thanks.

Short Answer:
What does your owner's manual say?

Longer Answer:
It depends.
Probably 0w30 is fine for winter driving if you live in Canada or a
northern state, but I wouldn't recommend it if you live in Texas, and
I'd avoid doing it on a high mileage car without an oil pressure gauge
because you have no way of knowing when thin is too thin.

That said, I've ran it in my cars in the winter and totally recommend it
for winter here in Winnipeg.

Concerning use of syn oil, found this.  Good read.

Thanks Ray.
