Lo-jack stickers and a blinky red LED
Terry Taylor - 08 Jan 2008 17:46 GMT
I have Lo-Jack on my car, and you don't get stickers or a blinky red LED. I
did get the early detection warning and if my car moves without the sensor,
I get a phone call / email / etc.
That reminds me, I need to try that out...

Well, what do YOU do when you hear a cal alarm? Do you rush towards it yelling
"Stop, thief", or do you ignore it? if YOU don't react to them, and it appears
that nobody else does either, what good are they -- besides creating noise
pollution?

Number one, you get a discount on your auto insurance. At least, I do.
Number two, the alarm will awaken some people from their trances, and they
might have a chance of seeing who is stealing the car.

Not in a city with more than a few thousand people. The only thing a wailing car
alarm does for people other than the owner is make them want to retrieve a
large crecent wrench to smash out the windows of the wailing car for the crime
of waking them from their sleep.

I lived once in a neighborhood where the normal reaction to car alarms
going off was for people to shoot at the car until the alarm stopped.

On a related note, in anaheim california, disney does a fireworks show every
night and many the car alarms in the area are triggered. I wonder how many
people who tried to park their cars for a week return to a dead battery?

Probably very few. The alarm resets after a few minutes so even if it
went off everyday there wouldn't be much drain on the battery for a
few minutes of headlight time.
Were I in the market for an alarm today I would be looking at one that
can let you know remotely that it is being disturbed. As many others
have said a blaring alarm gets you nothing except possibly more damage
from annoyed neighbors etc.. The remote page units let you know there
is a problem so you can go take care of it yourself. I know Viper has
a couple of systems with this functionality and would imagine others
do as well.

if you don't mind installing it yourself then, do a search on ebay and
buy something that is not shipped from China. something that is
stocked in canada or usa such as this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CAR-ALARM-LCD-2-WAY-PAGER-REMOTE-START-FORD-F150-
F-150_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33721QQihZ024QQitemZ370010574458QQrdZ1QQsspagen
ameZWDVW
or call around to audio or after market truck parts stores and buy it
there, and get them to install it.
I don't think I would buy it for the alarm, but the remote start might
be nice.

Get one that goes off every five minutes in the parking lot, all night
long, so your neighbors will be constantly checking it. This will dissuade
thieves from coming anywhere near it.
