just visited local AutoZone for the OBD scanner code and they adviced the
Check Eng light is on due to computer asking for maintenance (air, oil,
fluids) at some 77 or 78k interval - it's some kinds of "hey dude, do the
maintenance" reminder

car is a mazda -98 with 78k miles and I assume that I can simply disconnect
negative terminal of battery (ground) to reset computer or do I have to
actually have the code reset with a scanner or some diagnostic screw
terminal on the instrument panel?

reason the light does not apply is that all the items have been done,
usually at every 3 to 5k intervals, since new.

No, it is because there is something WRONG. That is an OBDII vehicle so
grab a code reader and find out what the code is. It can be just about
anything.

I got the actual printout of the code (not with me at the moment) and it
translates in the list of codes as generic maintenance update alert/alarm
which occurs at 77-78k miles on the odometer

the resolution was listed as "do the recommended maintenance and reset
computer"

I dunno how to clear the warning on your buggy, and don't know if
depowering will do it, but remember that your computer likely "learns"
itself in the beginning.  If you depower, that learning is lost and
you should follow the procedures in your owner's manual for recovering
from repower.
