Especially so in eating or take out establishments on the "wet" side of the islands which is where most of the full time
residents live. Most of the big name resorts are on the "dry" side where many of the permanent residents are employed,
commuting from the other side each day. Spam entrees are a little harder to find in the resort areas, whereas on the
"wet" side of each island you will find it in almost any place that serves cooked food.
I used to assume that the taste for the famous "mystery meat" was due to the availability of the product via the supply
chain of the military bases located there. My theory doesn't seem to apply other places in the world where the US
Military bases (Philippines, Guam, Japan, etc.) are/were located, however. Likewise, I don't recall ever knowing an X-US
Military person who developed a liking to the product from exposure to it while they were in active service. Maybe Spam
was imported there even before the military was there for feeding the workers on the sugar plantations? The mystery of
the mystery meat, anybody know or have a more likely scenario? regards, Joe.

I've been told that it is popular in the Philippines as well, although I
haven't been there. The reason given was simply that it didn't require
refrigeration, so without every house having a refrigerator it was the
easiest way to have meat, so it became common for a house to keep a
couple cans of Spam around. I guess eventually they figured out how to
make it taste good, and/or acquired a taste for it.
I know SWMBO's dad (ex-military) sometimes uses Spam instead of chipped
beef in SOS...
