Hello:

Have a 1993 Corolla.
Hardly ever used.

For a battery that has "really" run down, likely all the way, how much
running of the car engine
does it take to re-charge it ?

Thanks,
B.

Enough to go to the store and buy a new battery. If the battery went
that far down it is likely scrap now.

If it is run down all the way, it will never really charge up completely
ever again.

Anywhere from 1/2 hour to 3 hours, depending mostly on how much of a charge the battery will accept. You should use an ammeter to tell if the battery is charging. You don't need a fancy meter. I use a cheap meter I got years ago from JC Whitney that goes over the battery cable. A battery that is truly dead will not accept a charge, but a good battery that is almost completely discharged will completely recharge.

I have a really inexpensive battery charger.. For most batteries, it can
reestablish charge
in 2-4 hours.

In a few cases, I have left the unit on charge "overnight".  But, if you
cant reestablish function in that period of time, you need to think in terms
of a new battery.

Batteries are NOT what they used to be.

Actually, if a battery is run down all or most of the way, and if by
chance the battery is still good, (doubtful) it should
be recharged by a battery charger. Trying to charge a dead battery
with a car's alternator really doesn't work too well and is really
hard on an alternator. I have no idea how much a new alternator for
this car would cost, but I think a battery charger or a new battery
would be a lot cheaper.

Think of the alternator as a battery "maintainer", not a battery
charger.

I used to work at a auto/truck/lawn mower factory.New (dead batteries)
absolutely can be. and are charged up.After they are charged up, the
forming acid is dumped out and fresh battery acid is put into the
batteries.
