Looking at a used 2004 4 cyl Toyota Corolla private sale. Checked and
smelled oil looks a little dark and stinks of gas and exhaust. Was
going to ask for compression test but thinking forget it. This is the
second one I've looked at with the same condition. Is there any known
issues with these 4 cyl engines? Thanks in advance.

Check alt.autos.toyota. I can't give you an answer, but there are some who
can.
Just wade through all the political BS...

How does oil smell like exhaust?

Not that I can think of offhand.
If isn't the right car for you as proven by your initial looksee, then
pass on it. If you are serious about buying it barring any mechanical
issues, contact a quality shop about performing a complete pre
purchase inspection. A good inspection is well worth the money.
I don't think you'll be able to describe the exact condition of the
oil via text, nor will you get any accurate analysis on such a query.

Blown head gasket, no oil changes, overheated...
Either way not good.

I'm sorry that you hoped that helped. Still wondering what "exhaust"
smells like. Seriously.
