Wouldn't a stuck EGR cause a code or check engine light?
I found it to be a little strange that when I mentioned my warranty (good
until June 2005) that the service manager suggested that it was a
maintenance problem - not a warranty problem - and that it was basically my
fault for not driving the hell out of the truck ... all of this before
opening the hood.
Going to try a different dealer tomorrow and mention the EGR valve. If they
find any problems I will post the first dealer's name and address to this
group (and the BBB, and Mazda, and everywhere else).

Not necessarily. I owned a '97 mitsubishi that had repeated problems with the
EGR valve getting stuck open with carbon/etc. The only code I ever got was
"multiple cylinder misfire" and that only happened if I let the problem persist
for a long time. I've been told that the ECM can determine if the EGR is not
present, though.

Maybe, but the one on my 1995 T&C didn't when it failed. All I got were
high emissions. I changed the valve and got low emissions. That was a year
and a half today. Now, I get low emissions and the check engine light comes
on one a month with a failed egr code. Damn valve! :-(
A stuck egr allows combustion temps to go high which will assist in causing
pinging.
