Been hearing some knock out of my 2000 Mazda B2500 4cyl for a while. Mostly
during highway runs in a certain RPM band (around 2100). I can gas it up a
bit and it goes away. Don't drive it much but the trips are mostly back and
forth to work at around 7 miles a trip so the engine does reach operating
temps.

Took it to a dealer and they said that because of low mileage (18,400) the
fuel system was craped up. Did a $260 clean up. On the way back home the
engine still knocked. I called the dealer back and they now claim that I
will need to drive it a while (at least a tank of gas) before it clears up.

Did I get took here or what?

You got took.  Fuel system flushes are useless, in the US at least, all
gasoline
is mandated to have a detergent in it.  They are nothing more than a high
cost
money waster.  And $260 is espically high for one of these, most of the time
these
flushes are not that expensive.  (they are expensive, just not that
expensive)

Espically with this low a mileage I'd rule out carbon deposits or any other
of that sort of thing.  I am voting that it's the EGR valve stuck closed.
Since
emissions components are mandated by law to have an 80K warranty on them
the factory should pay for this.

An easy way to check this if your state does emissions testing is to run it
through the test center and get a report.  If it exceeds emissions (which it
will if the EGR valve is nonfunctional) then I would go back to the dealer
and raise hell.

Wouldn't a stuck EGR cause a code or check engine light?

I found it to be a little strange that when I mentioned my warranty (good
until June 2005) that the service manager suggested that it was a
maintenance problem - not a warranty problem - and that it was basically my
fault for not driving the hell out of the truck ... all of this before
opening the hood.

Going to try a different dealer tomorrow and mention the EGR valve. If they
find any problems I will post the first dealer's name and address to this
group (and the BBB, and Mazda, and everywhere else).

Not necessarily.  I owned a '97 mitsubishi that had repeated problems with the
EGR valve getting stuck open with carbon/etc.  The only code I ever got was
"multiple cylinder misfire" and that only happened if I let the problem persist
for a long time.  I've been told that the ECM can determine if the EGR is not
present, though.

Maybe, but the one on my 1995 T&C didn't when it failed.  All I got were
high emissions.  I changed the valve and got low emissions.  That was a year
and a half today.  Now, I get low emissions and the check engine light comes
on one a month with a failed egr code. Damn valve! :-(

A stuck egr allows combustion temps to go high which will assist in causing
pinging.
