Mazda Protege 2002 High RPM jerking

Hello,

I noticed today a problem with my car. When accelerating, the engine
starts jerking at around 5500 RPM. The jerk comes from the engine and
it feels like the engine cutoff is engaging and disengaging rapidly (2
or 3 times per seconds). But the engine keeps running faster (I tried
it up to 6500RPM). This is a bit freaking when you need to accelerate
fast!

In the past, I noticed that the engine cutoff speed was around
7250RPM. So I am sure that it is not because the engine can't go
higher than 5500. I checked the air filter, and it is just fine. The
spark plugs are 20000km (12500 miles)old and they are BOSH Platinum4
so they should last for a while.

Can someone knows what is causing this?

Thank

Martin

I've seen a bad spark plug wire cause this exact same issue.  The
vehicle was turbo charged, but the symptoms seemed identical.  I also
had more "jerking" under load then when in neutral.

Spark plug wire is a very good guess. I'm not sure which part of the
world you are located at, but if you can, purchase a can of a product
made by Chevron called Techron and add it to your gas.

Bad gas or gas with water would do this for FI cars as well.

If you can't get Techron, use a very good FI cleaner for a couple of
tank fulls and see if things get better.

I live in Quebec, Canada and usually we have water in gas problem in
the winter. With the cold weather (usually around -20C (-4F) in
January) everybit of water in the air freezes on contach with a
metallic (and even non metallic) part. It is common use here to add a
couple of oz of alchool in the gas tank to have it mix to the water and
prevent the gaz lines from freezing.

Unfortunatly, the problem started to appear before the temperature got
under 32F. So I doubt very much that there is water in the gaz. I must
also point out that the air is usually not humid here.

Could it just be that the injectors are dirty? And if I follow the
spark plug wire path, it should be worst on a rainny day, right?

I am also thinking if it could be one of the ignition module. My car
doesn't have a distributor, It uses direct ignition. Can a problem like
mine be caused by a defective one?

Thanks,

Martin
