My son has a 93 5 liter Mustang 5 speed. He had used it to go
somewhere, tried to start it a few hours later and now.... nothing!
The car will crank but not fire.
He's changed the plugs (they needed it) and checked to see that he has
spark.
Now we're thinking maybe the problem is with fuel. Can't smell gas on
the plugs so maybe something's wrong there.
Where is the fuel filter?
And the fuel pump? Should he hear the pump when listening at the gas
cap?
I told him to pull a fuel line and see if he's got pressure.
Any other ideas? Car has ~80K miles and has been running fine til
now.
TIA
Andy

Have you checked:
a) Fuel pump fuse
b) Fuel pump relay

You can't 'idiot proof' anything....every time you try, they just make
better idiots.

Good ideas. Where are they located? He checked the fuses in the fuse
block and they're all OK.
Is the fuel pump fuse located somewhere else?
Also, where's the relay?
Thanks.

Under the car, right side, in front of the rear wheel.
Looks like a big tin can strapped to the frame rail.

The pump should run for about a second when the key is turned to "on".
You should be able to hear it buzz from inside the car.

Or use the schraeder "test port" in the metal fuel rail on the engine.
40 psi, so watch your eyes.
My guesses:
Did he slam the trunk when he parked it?
Any chance some other car thumped it from behind while parked?
Check the "inertia switch" in the trunk. If tripped, the fuel pump won't run.
Should be on the left hinge bracket (trunk models) or the rear panel by
the lock (hatchbacks). Push in the button to reset it.

Good info, MB, I'll have him check all of that. Thanks.

What's an "ecu"? Engine control unit? You mean the car's computer?
And how would we check an "ecu"?
TIA

ECM/ECU. If you have spark or clicking injectors than half is
working. If you hear two relay click from the fuel relay when the
pump runs for about a second when the key is turned to "on" or
the computer check engine light works then the ECU should be
okay.

Brother in laws van with a 5.0 just demonstrated same symptoms. It was the
computer(ECU) Just another thing to think about......
