My 1985 Ford F250 pickup with a 460 and a holley double pumper carb
will start, but dies after 30-45 seconds. It seems to run out of
fuel. The truck ran fine one day, and the next day won't run longer
than the 30-45 seconds.
The truck has dual fuel tanks with a pump/filter in each tank, but the
problem occurs on both tanks, so I don't feel it is a pump problem.
Also, it does not have any other in line filters, or auxilary pumps
between the tanks and the engine.
The truck will immediately restart, but does the same thing again and
again.
Between myself and a mechanic I use, here are the things we have
tried:
- Replaced the in line fuel filter / check valve / return port.
- Removed the filters in the inlets of the carb.
- Replaced the fuel pump sensors.
- Tried a new electronic ignition module.
- Tried a new coil.
- Tested the spark with an extra spark plug - it appears to have spark
as it is dieing, just slowing down as the rpm's drop.
I am pretty well stumped at this point. Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I had the same problem with my 1986 Ford 250 with the 460.
The 460 has an oil pressure switch inline with the
power line of the fuel pumps. When you turn the key to
START there is a bypass circuit that kicks on the fuel
pumps and they charge the fuel lines, regardless of
what the oil pressure switch says. However once the
key is released to the RUN position the bypass circuit
is turned off and the primary circuit takes over. This
is why it runs for a bit then dies.
It seemed like my pressure switch was stuck or
something else was goofed with it. I say this because
the truck was doing this and I had another problem so
I had it towed to my mechanic. Once there there truck
worked fine. A few months later the problem crept back
up. I found the switch and bypassed it and the truck
ran fine. I then changed my oil and oil filter and it
fixed the problem. The oil was pretty old as its a
farm truck.
The switch is located in back of the engine on top.
It's a freaky looking thing that looked like it could
also have vaccum hoses attached to it if I recall.

Sam,
Thanks for the info. I had heard of this, and changed the oil
pressure sending unit yesterday, but it did not solve the problem.
This is also a farm truck, overdue for an oil change, so I need to try
that. Is this a different switch from the normal oil pressure
sending unit? This one was located at the back of the engine near the
transmission, and only had a single wire connected to it. If there is
another one I would appreciate any further input on how to find it....

I don`t see where you replaced the fuel pump relay?? known as a problem
quite often. KB
