first gear slip

I have an '88 Jeep Cherokee with a 5 speed and
a 4L engine.  Sometimes when I start out in first
gear (already accelerating), the tranny slips out
of first gear.  Of course, there's a clunk as the
gears are no longer engaged.  When this happens,
I have to quickly shift back into first, then
continue accelerating (while hoping no one runs
into me!)  I'm holding the shift lever in place
so I really don't know if it's trying to slip
again.  This happens so sporadically that I can't
get a handle on the problem.

Any idea what's going on?

Thanks,

This sounds like a bad/worn slide-rail bushing in the transmission (this
may affect reverse gear too, but you haven't noticed it yet), this
causes the tranny to slip out of gear as you describe.  Essentially, you
need to have your tranny rebuilt to (re)solve this problem.    -PapaRick

I would be looking really close at the engine and tranny mounts.  If one
is broken the engine will shift under acceleration or deceleration and
pop it out of gear.

If you ever get a judder when first starting in first or reverse, look
at the tranny mount first, it likely will be the one torn.

Mine has over 300K on it and still running on the original clutch even!

As Rick R. said earlier, check for mounts first, WHILE you check for
linkage adjustment.  Could be it's not quite going far enough into 1st (and
reverse) due to needing adjustment.  More likely the mount(s); and either
much easier on the purse than a rebuild.  s
