I have a 99 Plymouth Breeze. I didn't get any heat at all this morning, I
popped the hood and saw the anitfreeze was very low.  I filled it 3/4 until
the fill line. I notice the temp gauge on the dash fluctates between 1/4 and
a little below half. Any ideas what's the problem is, before my mechanic
does any unneeded procedures.

Did you check the radiator or only check the overflow tank?  Make sure the
engine is cold and take off the radiator cap and check to make sure there's
fluid in the radiator and it's full.

I'll wait until it cools down.

And recheck it the next day when cold.

I didn't have enough in the overflow tank, I went back to auto zone and
refilled it to the line. I drove for an hour doing various speeds 45- 90
and the needle was at it's normal spot. I'll recheck tomorrow. Thanks a lot
guys.

I would be concern about why radiator is low on coolant.
Check around for signs of coolant leaks and check level frequently.
Also check ground area under car after parked for awhile, for any
coolant.

I checked everything under the car no leaks. The temp gauge still goes
between 1/4 ( where it usually is) and 1/2. It never touches half though.
Maybe the thermostat is busted?

Fill the overflow thank and note where the level is when cold and hot.
Monitor for awhile, and keep some extra water in the trunk.
You may of had some air in the system that was causing temp sensor to read
air temp vs. coolant.
If you have service manual, see if there is a sequence for bleeding air
out of the system.
Was the cooling system serviced recently?

Maybe 6 or 7 months ago.

I may have not tightened the reservoir tanks completely before those
problems started. When the car is cold, cooling tank  is right over the fill
line and hot is slightly below the fill line. When I idle the temp gauge on
the dash rises slightly ( still not over 1/2).
I tried taking the coolant cap off, but I don't want to damage the cap by
using a screwdriver. It twist but I can't get it off.
