Ok, this is one of those "My symptoms are...what is my illness?"
questions. Read on for the story or skip to the end for the symptoms.
Three times I've had this same problem. My golf starts choking, and a
rough idle leads to a stall.
First time was almost a year ago. 40MPH-65MPH in traffic when the
traffic opened up. But, my golf starts choking, and a rough idle leads
to a stall. I'm not overheating. I pull over two lanes of traffic, let
the car sit for a while. I restart it and continue fine. Then I didn't
drive it for maybe eight (8) months. Replaced the battery and
alternator. Thought the problem was related.
Second time it happened was about two weeks ago. I was driving around
the SF bay area. I drove from SF to Palo Alto, up to Oakland and it
starts to choke. I stopped for about 30min. It restarted, but driving a
little rough. Then drove back to Palo Alto and it died: starts choking,
and a rough idle leads to a stall. This time I thought it was the
clutch, so I replaced the clutch and had the fly wheel resurfaced.
Third and most recent time I was driving in town and as I approached a
light it starts choking, and a rough idle leads to a stall. This time I
was able to keep the car running by giving it more gas. As soon as I
let up off the gas, it stalls. So I replaced the spark plugs, and all
the cylinders are getting some from the distributor. This AM, I was
checking over the car and 1/6 starts lead to this choking and rough
idle leading to a stall.
WHAT IS IT? Symptoms:
-> Starts choking, and looses power.
-> A rough idle leads to a stall.
-> Problem is intermittent (once or twice in the last week: 3 days
commute (180mi), and 2 days city (10Mi)).
-> Already replaced the other similar probable causes (alternator and
clutch).
-> (questions???)
Is this mechanical failure like a fuel pump going bad?
Or is it an air intake problem, faulty sensor?
I'm really skinned for cash and any chance for me to fix this without
paying some shop to tinker around trying to find this ghost problem
will save me much needed cash. Cheers!

This last one, run your Hands over every hose, you may find a hose
failure on the UNDERSIDE where you cannot see it with your eyes.

That's simple. I hope its just that, and I could pull over anywhere to
fix it in a jiff.
To make it easier to diagnose, I want to replace the fuel pump. Its
origianl to the car. no doubt that it could use a fix. Working on
gasoline is touchy, if you get too dirty it goes through the whole
system.
