Was wondering if having to replace an 02 sensor at 79,000 miles is
unusually premature?

Not really.  A lot can ruin one (gas additives, etc.).

Not on a Mazda 626 especially. Ive seen probs with 626, protege, miata, 50K
miles plus throwing codes for o2 sensors... i consider it something that
you change when it stops working, no matter what the mileage....
